This article deals with the problem of the hall-marks found on Sevillian silverwork, especially that of the Baroque period. A brief introduction to the origin of hall-marking is followed by a study of Spanish hall-marks of different periods, which endeavours to distinguish the various types of Sevillian marks and their development over the centuries, with special emphasis on the Baroque period.-The problem of subsequent hall-marking and the different types of forgery is also discussed.
