The Discours sur l’origine et les fondements de l’ineglité parmi les hommes is likely Rousseau’s masterly work, but it was not well understood by the Enlightened Circle of Paris; it was understood nevertheless by Enlightened German Circle, specially by Kant. In order to understand the book it is inexcusable to place him within the literary genre to which he belongs, created mainly by Voltaire: the genre of “Philosophical History”, that is, the hypothetic-normative Reconstruction of the Beginnings and the Evolution of Society, that which renders possible to establish the pertinent Social Contract (contrasted to “Historical Contract”), whose prescriptive orders will lead the Present and the Future of Mankind.
