Abstract

Confraternities of New Spain were particularly sensitive for loud celebrations. The bells, music, songs and cohetes were part of the cult to their images and their corporate symbols. In the second half of the century, the Crown and the bishops, inspired by a new sensitivity, would deem disorderly, superfluous and even profane some of those sounds, seeking to suppress or eliminate them to protect the religious character of these corporations.
