Abstract
This article analyzes the different ways in which Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas has been remembered since his death in 1824. “Defender of the Church” at the start and then later associated with the Hospice of Guadalajara as an "Apostle of Charity". In the 20th century, José Ignacio Dávila Garibi turned him into a man with "progressive nature", and professional historiography has linked him to the Enlightenment in Nueva Galicia.
