Two factors had significant importance in Alfonso de Cartagena’s life and work: his paternal ascendancy and the Council of Basel (1434-1439). These, would determine essential aspects of the Defensorium, the chief work of pro-“converso” literature. Theory and praxis of biblical hermeneutics, as well as, the idea of the integration of Jews and pagans into Christianity have roots in Pablo de Santa María’s works, such as Additiones and Scrutinium Scripturarum, from which some borrowings are analyzed in this paper. As to the treatment of conversion in the Council of Basel, established in the 1434 decree, it could have encouraged the Pauline inspiration of the Defensorium, suggesting a juridical approach.
