Radio, Literature, and Performing Arts in Latin America and Spain

Abstract

This issue of Enclaves, coinciding with the centenary celebration of the official creation of the first broadcasting station in Spain—Radio Barcelona, inaugurated in November 1924—serves as a meeting space for the analysis of the interrelations between radio, literature, and performing arts, approached from perspectives linked to various temporalities, geographies, and disciplines. The articles gathered in this monograph aim to delve into the panorama of formal, artistic, structural, and institutional ramifications that encompass these historical and transitional practices, considering both their diachronic dimension and their current manifestations, within the context of their development in Latin America and Spain. By combining different contributions—from the analytical spectrum of philology, theater studies, media studies, radio studies, and sound studies—and addressing various Spanish-speaking national contexts—Argentina, Spain, Mexico, and Uruguay—this issue seeks to offer an extensive and specific approach to the radio and sound phenomenon as a medium that intersects with literary and theatrical practices, producing new ways of thinking about both listening and the meanings of sounds in art, and reconfiguring the relationships of writers and playwrights with sound intermediality, as well as with listener communities.
