Abstract

This is a review of a book which, following in the wake of important works such as La tradición velada (Madrid: Biblioteca Nueva, 1990), by Francisco José Martín, or El pensamiento lingüístico de José Ortega y Gasset (A Coruña: Spiralia, 2009), by Concha d' Olhaberriague, highlights the relevance and multiple meaning of exile that the year 1932 represents in the philosopher's biographical trajectory, when disappointment with politics and the need to concentrate on his philosophical meditations lead him to a withdrawal from the public stage, even before the geographical exile associated with the Civil War. Circumstances had changed, and from 1936 onwards they changed in particular, although Ortega's vocation did not. Esmeralda Balaguer takes as an example the question of his silence (so often misinterpreted by other authors) and shows how fidelity to the imperative of authenticity allowed the philosopher to renew in the last decades of his production numerous conceptions that he had defended from very early on.
