Abstract

This article analyzes one of the most relevant facets of Lord Acton's political thought: the relationship between Catholicism and liberalism. Some of his most significant writings on this subject during the decades from 1850 to 1870 are used, complemented with data from his correspondence and keeping in mind the main available studies on his intellectual biography. Here it is argued that Acton proposed a significantly particular symbiosis of Catholicism and liberalism, indebted to the English liberal tradition, but with a component of historiographical and ethical analysis that makes it notable. His way of intertwining Christianity and moral individualism, based on what he called “the Christian notion of conscience”, radically confronted the church with any form of despotism and took refuge in an inescapable separation of spheres. This explains his rejection of the conciliar decrees proclaimed by Pius IX in 1870 and his uncomfortable and ambiguous position within the church after that date. But also his unique and problematic contribution to the attempt to reconcile Catholicism and liberalism in Europe in the last quarter of the 19th century.
