Abstract
The essay proposes to reflect on the reading possibilities offered by historical sources based on the review of two communications regarding the repartimiento and their prohibition made by the Ordenanza decree of 1786. The first document studied is a report from the Intendente of Veracruz and, the second, is a request from the merchants of Cosamaloapan, both documents from 1790. As the background of this debate are the attempts of the commercial elite of the city and port of Veracruz to participate in the trade boom of cotton, for which it was required to have farmland that until moment was in the hands of large landowner families
