Dream and power in the colonial mayan religion

Abstract

The paper discusses the relationships between dreamsand power, based on the philological analysis of afragmentof “An Incantation”, a chapter from the Book of Chilam Balamof Chumayel. The testimony, dated on the 18th century, allowsus to understand that for colonial Mayan religious thought dreams are part of the process of acquiring knowledge and authority.
