Abstract

Despite the tolerant attitude of Cuban society towards immigrants, the impact of anti-Semitic campaigns orchestrated from Europe was felt through the Cuban press, who responded against Jewish immigration. This influenced the enactment of immigration restrictions that repeatedly led to deny landing permission to Jewish refugees. The most representative case was the St. Louis vapor that had to leave the port of Havana in 1939 with 917 Jews on board.
