Abstract
The present article deals with life in Tawantinsuyo and the chaos after the murder of Atahuallpa (1533) by the Spanish conquerors. On the basis of chronicles by Titu Cussi Yupanqui, Guamán Poma de Ayala and Garcilaso de la Vega, we analyze the discomfiture of the Quechua people due to the loss of their leader and the process of acculturation established by the Spaniards in their (failed) attempt to efface the cultural legacy of the Incas.
