Abstract

Mateo Pérez de Alesio in his correspondence makes clear his intention to seek riches and not return until finding them. The artist exploited tirelessly in Vilcabamba and Huancavelica mines, but never found gold. The painter had to know at first hand the alchemical method of cold amalgamation that, although in use in the viceroyalty of Mexico, would not extend to Peru until the beginning of the 17th century. In 1764, the Huancavelica mine is described as "the most precious jewel of S.M. in America".
