Valuing the knowledge about classical theories and scholars in communication history, this article revisits Robert Park by underlying the historicism in his thought about the press and by examining especially the text “The natural history of the newspaper”, published one hundred years ago, in 1923. By proposing a fundamental articulation between history and social theory and, at the same time, placing communication at the core of his analysis, this prominent Chicago School sociologist deserves a special place in the history of historical studies on the media. Born in the 19th century, his own biography intertwines meaningfully with social changes in journalism and society.
