ABSTRACT: This paper studies the different types of public servant in Spain during the Nazrid period. It examines their appointment, their remuneration and their function, and draws the conclusion that the dependence on the king of alcaides, alguaciles and cadíes was very significant. They acted as public servants who enforced the law of the sharia. On the other hand, the alfaquíes appear to have had more independence, mainly because many of them were financed by the city boroughs and country villages. For this reason, the mosque appears at times to be a link between the community and the state.
