ABSTRACT: This paper studies the origins of Pedro Muñiz de Godoy from Cordoba, Master of the Order of Calatrava and later of the Order of Santiago, and one of the most outstanding noblemen of the reign of Enrique II. His important role in politics during the civil war between Pedro I and his half-brother, his service to the first two Trastamara kings and his heroic death in the Battle of Valverde are the main reasons why chroniclers and genealogists have been interested in his person and lineage, although their findings do contain many errors. Through the study of the documentation we can see how the second son of a noble family from Cordoba with connections with the Military Orders of Santiago and Calatrava founded a prestigious lineage which, for economic reasons, could not be included among the most important noble families in Cordoba, but which permitted him to marry his children to members of those important families.
