ABSTRACT: The strategic situation of Andalusia, located between two major seas and their natural resources, contributed during the latter centuries of the Middle Ages, to the economic development of the region. The production of goods that were in great demand internationally, the role of Andalusia as an intermediary, and the growing importance of the Atlantic routes and markets all favoured this development, which had important repercussions on Andalusian society, especially in the areas most in contact with the above-mentioned routes.
