Resumo

A iniciativa de cabos submarinos SMART é uma área de investigação científica em desenvolvimento que visa integrar e utilizar uma rede de sensores num sistema de cabos submarinos para recolher dados científicos com vista a uma melhor compreensão, planeamento e comunicação de informações relacionadas com as alterações climáticas, a subida do nível do mar, o aquecimento dos oceanos, os tsunamis e os sismos. O Chile, através do seu projeto do cabo Humboldt, pretende melhorar a rede de comunicações para os sensores de tsunamis na Antárctida, reforçando as capacidades SMART para a monitorização de tsunamis na região antárctica, o que melhorará a avaliação das ameaças para o alerta precoce de tsunamis em apoio às bases antárcticas. A monitorização das regiões polares é uma componente essencial da compreensão das alterações climáticas. Qual é o regime jurídico que o projeto do cabo antártico deve abordar?
