It is commonplace in studies of Xenophon's Cyropaedia to see it as a treatise on political leadership (προστάτης; ἄρχων), as well as a speculum principum for the Greece of his time and the entire Western tradition. It has been less common to read the Anabasis as a treatise on political philosophy, but there have been no shortage of solvent exercises that see in it another of Xenophon's works on political leadership and the figure of a Socratic prince in a παμβασιλεία.
