The analysis of the American and French revolutions in Acton's thought falls within a broader context of reflections on history understood in terms of a lex continui. However, while the Revolution on the other side of the Atlantic followed a path of continuity to the point where it is possible to define a kind of "improvement-maintenance", the French revolution took the form of an element of discontinuity - a category that involves "improvement-annihilation," and which aims to refound society as a whole, ex novo, and to create a new type of citizen. It is precisely this objective that lies at the root of its failure. This conception places Acton in the liberal-democratic tradition that runs from Edmund Burke to Tocqueville.Downloads
