Abstract
According to the chronicles of the 16th and 17th centuries, it was Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui who ordered the funerals of Sapay Inca to be hold in two steps. The first one had to be conducted just after the ruler’s death and the second one, a year later. In this article, the whole ritual will be analysed in order to, afterwards, think over the political reasons that could lead Pachacuti plan the development of the ceremony in that particular way.
