The Lost Opportunity: Somos Magazine and the Twilight of the Argentine Military Dictatorship (1982-1983)

This article analyzes the editorial stance of the Argentine magazine Somos during the period known as the "transition" to Argentine democracy, between mid-1982 and late 1983. During this time, the military government, initiated after a coup d'état on March 24, 1976, was forced to organize its departure from power and hand it over to civilians, following the failure of Argentina's military defeat by the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands in June 1982. Somos, which had been an active defender of dictatorial actions in some of its core policies, such as political repression and the liberal attempt at economics, in this new phase took a critical stance on some aspects of the government, while emphasizing the recurring problems of Argentine identity that transcended military administration, explained the new political failure, and cast doubt on the hope for a new democratic era.
