Jaime Benítez and the construction of Puerto Rican identity in Revista de Occidente: The destiny of Puerto Rico

In his article "On the Political and Cultural Future of Puerto Rico" (1966), published in Revista de Occidente, Jaime Benítez uses this platform of intellectual exchange to address the complex issue of Puerto Rican identity, situated between its Spanish heritage and its relationship with the United States. Through a historical and situational analysis, Benítez reflects on the political, social, and cultural challenges facing Puerto Rico after the U.S. annexation in 1898. In this context, he examines the model of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (ELA), a sui generis solution that seeks to balance the preservation of Puerto Rican cultural identity with economic and political interests, without opting for independence or full assimilation into the United States.
