ABSTRACT: The permanent conflict over the use of common property in the realengo of Castile was particularly intense in the Council of Ciudad Rodrigo. The fact that many of the most prominent members of the Council, especially those belonging to the caballería villana, took part in these disputes illustrates to what extent economic, hereditary and political interests were linked in this centuries-old conflict. In addition, the study of these disputes sheds light on the structure of feudal power at a local level.
