ABSTRACT: The “price list” of 1207 is an essential testament to the political, cultural and linguistic history of castile. It contains the oldest known decisions issued by a castilian protoparliamentary assembly; it reflects the variety of products and coins available in the kingdom’s markets, and does so in the everyday romance speech that notaries and poets were beginning to write down at the turn of the century as an alternative to Latin, the only written language known in christian spain until this period. I published this text in 1988 for a conference on the history of the Cortes of castile and Leon, when I looked at it from an historical and lexical perspective. I return to it again here, paying more attention to the written code used to reflect a romance language that was already well established in its oral form, but was beginning to take shape as a system of written symbols.
