Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the role of the notaries of the House of Trade through the general inspections the institution underwent in the first half of the 17th century. It examines the functions of these officials, as well as the excesses detected in their performance, such as the collection of excessive fees and noncompliance with regulations. This article also addresses the consequences of these inspections, manifested in sanctions and reforms. It delves into how the inspections led by Francisco de Tejada (1615-1618) and Juan de Góngora (1642-1648) impacted the notaries, detailing the investigations of the inspectors, the accusations made, the convictions issued, and the resulting changes in notary administration.
