Abstract

ABSTRACT: For the start-up of new settlements in the Spain of the Modern Age, together with the construction of buildings and the clearing and cultivation of the land, it was always necessary to have a series of jobs aimed at providing service to its neighbours. Among them the notary public stood out, since any public or private transaction had to be carried out before him to acquire the necessary legal validity. The New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia, born as an agrarian colonization during the reign of Carlos III, also had these notaries from their inception, although we still know very little about them. The objective of this work, therefore, will consist of making an approximation to the figure of the clerk in these new colonies from 1767 to 1835, pointing out their main characteristics and how they were affected by the conflicts of powers between the Intendancy and the mayors of this jurisdiction.
