Abstract

ABSTRACT:This work studies the evolution of the municipal notary’s office of Zaragoza and the officials who governed it in the Late Middle Ages. The study is based on the analysis of the municipal records (Libros de Actos Comunes) preserved between 1440 and 1515, examining the activity of the main notaries, their substitutes, and other scribes of subordinate nature, and identifying their roles and influence within the municipal administration. The results obtained show that the municipal notary’s office was not a simply administrative bureau, but served as a vehicle for social and institutional advancement, significantly contributing to the consolidation of urban power.
