ABSTRACT: This article is a legal analysis of the will of Luis de Santángel, the royal treasurer, who supported Christopher Columbus on his first voyage. Santángel made his will in Valencia, before a Valencian notary and in compliance with Valencian law, but due to his commercial activity with the Kingdom of Castile he was familiar with Castilian law. Because Santángel lived between two kingdoms, with different jurisdictional systems, his will has been found to incorporate aspects of both common law and Castilian law, taking advantage of the legal resources that interest him most to determine his last will and testament.
