Picturebooks are a type of multimodal text that construct narrative meanings through the interdependence of text, images, sequencing, and the materiality of the book as an object. While typically associated with early education, their artistic and experimental nature make them an ideal artistic medium for readers of all ages. In this research, we analyse the works of Madrid-based author and illustrator Manuel Marsol, whose picturebooks have garnered multiple international awards. Using a content analysis method, we evaluate six of his picturebooks for their literary, artistic, and semiotic qualities, highlighting the main characteristics of his narratives. The referentiality and allusions contained in his works demonstrate that they are intended for a dual audience that transcends the conventions and stereotypes of children's literature. We conclude that these types of picturebooks are important in the educational field for enhancing the reading experience of their audience through the activation of intertextuality, which extends beyond literature to include other cultural products.
