Abstract

The apparent contradiction between John Stuart Mill’s liberalism and his defense of colonialism as a way of governing 'uncivilized' peoples has sparked widespread debate in recent decades. This article aims to explore Mill’s arguments within the context of the ideas of his time, as well as the complexity of his reflections in reconciling liberalism, utilitarianism, national character, and the possibility of self-government for colonized peoples.
