Abstract

Zionism is a controversial ideology. For some, it is a National Liberation Movement that has allowed the Jewish people to have a state in which to develop; for others, it is a racist element that favours discrimination against other people living in the region who have not had the option of developing a state. In any case, proponents of both approaches see Zionism as an ideology created and defended by Jews that has been key to the establishment and survival of the state of Israel. However, sixty years before Theodor Herzl wrote the book ‘The Jewish State’, there were already critical Christian leaders who defended the theological need for Jews to return to Palestine and create a state there. This reality called Christian Zionism is relatively unknown, and if it had not existed, we would not be talking about the State of Israel today. Therefore, this paper will try to decipher what Christian Zionism consists of and to what extent it has contributed to the creation and survival of the current state of Israel.
