Abstract

Since the beginning of the Troubles, the situation in Northern Ireland was marked by IRA violence and sectarian confrontation between the Catholic and Protestant communities. At the beginning of the 1990s, a new panorama of hope opened up when it came to putting an end to terrorism, thanks to the Good Friday Agreement (April 10, 1998). This article analyzes the keys and context of the film The Boxer (1997), by the renowned Dublin director Jim Sheridan, from the methodology of the relationships of history and cinema. The film, prior to the agreements, establishes how fiction cinema can be a way to influence (positively) society, in addition to becoming a real and symbolic portrait of the crudeness and affection of violence and the most manifest unreason that It caused so much damage to Northern Irish society
