Abstract

The presence of Christian New Religious Movements (NRM), also known as cults, although this term includes a pejorative nuance, is increasingly evident in South Korea. There are currently around eighteen operational groups, from which five stand out: Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, commonly known as the Unification Church; Shincheonji Church of Jesus: the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony; the World Mission Society Church of God; Christian Gospel Mission, better known as Jesus Morning Star (JMS); and Guwonpa or Good News Mission. This article will investigate the origin of the first Christian NMRs, which emerged in the north during the Japanese occupation, as well as their expansion to the south with the end of the Korean War. Finally, it will be presented one of the most influential Christian NMR in South Korea: the Unification Church.
