Abstract

The aim of this research is to carry out a comparative study of military interventionism in Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The thesis I defend is that armies intervene when the conditions are created for them to do so. There is no such thing as a dichotomy between interventionist and non-interventionist armies in the political decision-making process.

Nuestra trayectoria investigadora se ha centrado en la historia militar española del siglo XX como campo fundamental, articulándose en dos líneas. La primera, desarrollada a partir de 1995, se ha centrado en el periodo de la transición y la consolidación democrática en España (1975-1986). Los principales resultados de esta dinámica de trabajo fueron una memoria de licenciatura bajo el título La involución militar en la transición: los antecedentes del 23-F, que fue calificada con “Sobresaliente con opción al premio extraordinario”; una tesis doctoral titulada La involución militar en la transición: el Golpe de Estado del 23-F, calificada con “Apto cum laude”; un libro académico; uno de divulgación; dos capítulos en obras académicas, y quince artículos en revistas indexadas evaluados por pares. Los aspectos más importantes de este conjunto de investigaciones han sido dos. El primero, que se elaboraron a partir de fuentes inéditas hasta ese momento, como por ejemplo los sumarios instruidos por los intentos golpistas que se desencadenaron en este periodo, que constituyen la base fundamental para estudiar estas dinámicas, o el archivo del capitán general Manuel Gutiérrez Mellado. El segundo, que las acciones involucionistas de este periodo –el golpe de Estado del 23-F, la “operación Galaxia” o la “intentona Torres Rojas”– fueron estudiadas académicamente de acuerdo con la metodología propia de la historia por primera vez. Además, uno de los artículos, titulado “La última trinchera: el poder militar y el problema de la Unión Militar Democrática durante la transición y la consolidación democrática, 1975-1986”, recibió el IV Premio Javier Tusell para Jóvenes Historiadores, convocado por la Asociación de Historiadores del Presente.

La segunda línea de investigación, puesta en marcha a partir de2011, haabordado el estudio de los Ejércitos españoles desde 1931. Este periodo había sido analizado en algunas de nuestras obras anteriormente. No obstante, fue a partir de la fecha señalada cuando se convirtió en un tramo de especial interés para nosotros. Pues, las Fuerzas Armadas de la transición fueron herederas de las que se crearon en el franquismo, y estas a su vez tuvieron su origen en las dinámicas que se pusieron en marcha en las campañas de Marruecos (1909-1927) y en la Segunda República (1931-1936). El resultado de las investigaciones en esta línea han sido dos libros académicos publicados en 2017 y 2019; dos capítulos en obras colectivas, uno de ellos evaluados de acuerdo con los criterios de calidad establecidos por la ANECA, y tres artículos en revistas indexadas evaluados por pares.

El resultado de las investigaciones realizadas en estas dos líneas ha sido un análisis profundo de las Fuerzas Armadas desde 1931 hasta 1986.

Finalmente, y vinculada con el campo de la involución militar, hemos desarrollado una tercera línea de investigación centrada en la extrema derecha y el fascismo. El resultado de esta labor ha sido una edición crítica de la obra de Ramiro Ledesma Ramos, ¿Fascismo en España?, que recibió una ayuda a la edición del Ministerio de Educación y Deporte; tres capítulos en obras colectivas de carácter académico, y dos artículos en revistas indexada evaluados por pares.
