Resumen

Nuestro trabajo analiza el suicidio revolucionario, tal como fue concebido por Huey Pierce Newton, fundador del Black Panther Party for Self Defense, vinculándolo con la tradición de resistencia civil. El contexto de ese concepto y de esa práctica son algunas teorías auto sacrificiales revolucionarias en política. A partir de ellas, Newton establece el vínculo y a la vez la ruptura con acciones previas en defensa de los derechos civiles y de resistencia pacífica. Nos centraremos principalmente en los ensayos de Newton titulados To Die For the People (1972) y en su autobiografía Revolutionary Suicide (1973). La originalidad de nuestro trabajo reside en que el tema ha sido escasamente tratado y ni siquiera estuvo presente en el número especial de 2017 dedicado al Partido por el Journal of African American Studies. Concluiremos que el autosacrificio revolucionario será la clave que le permita acoger, renovar y transmitir una inflexión específica de la resistencia civil, que hunde sus raíces en autores y tradiciones que Newton apenas cita.

Hernán Neira, Universidad de Santiago de Chile

Hernán Neira ha publicado los relatos A golpes de hacha y fuego (Editorial Andrés Bello, Santiago, 1995) y las novelas El sueño inconcluso (Editorial Planeta, Santiago, 1999) y El naufragio de la luz (Ediciones B, Barcelona, 2004). Asimismo ha publicado los ensayos filosóficos El espejo del olvido: ensayos americanos (Dolmen Ediciones, Santiago, 1997), La ciudad y las palabras (Editorial Universitaria, Santiago, 2004) y Visión de los vencidos. Estudio y transcripción de las Memorias de Juan Bautista Tupac Amaru (Editorial Universidad de Santiago,2009). También ha colaborado en los diarios El Mercurio (Chile), El País(España), revista Ecos de España y Latinoamérica (Alemania) y The International Literary QuarterlyNueva York.

Es profesor de la Universidad de Santiago de Chile.
