La Vico’s Influence on Cassirer

Abstract

This essay intends to examine and analyze the presence and relevance of the Vico’s citations in the works of Cassirer, tracing chronologically the references throughout his career. Cassirer’s conception of Vico as the founder of the Geisteswissenschaften and the discoverer of myth is highlighted. The author deals with the recurring themes present in Cassirer’s interpretation of Vico and explores the differences between their philosophies, concluding that the German philosopher sees Vico through the lens of idealism, which limits his own comprehension of Vico’s originality.
