Abstract
This article deals with the thinking of G. Vico, mainly with regard to the formation of a psychological science that endows it with its own corpus full of meanings, whose main interest are the social representations to allow understanding individual and social life. In order to achieve this task, we first analyze the way in which society has evolved, based on Vico’s ideas expressed in his work, the Scienza nuova. Subsequently, the role of social representations in the understanding of the properly human is examined. It also presents a sketch of the inte- llectual and scientific environment that was lived in the time of Vico; The impact of Vico’s thought is also analy- zed in the eternal dispute that has persisted in the social sciences and the humanities about the direction they should follow, personified at the crossroads to: explain or understand?
