Back to Plato from Ortega’s view: the tragicomic interpretation of life

Abstract
At the end of Plato´s Symposium Socrates states without further clarification that the author of both tragedy and comedy is the same man. According to Ortega, this thesis is the seed of the modern novel, and the first one was Cervantes’ Quixote. This paper shows the core of Ortega’s interpretation of Quixote and proposes, from this point of view, a hermeneutic of the enigmatic socratic phrase from Ortega´s metaphysical height, very different from heideggerian thought and sartrian existentialism.
