Resumo

This article investigates to what extent a new concept of female development is presented in two texts written by German women writers, Sophie von La Roche and Caroline Auguste Fischer. In both texts travel motif is used as an expression of the desire to become independent. Travels of the protagonists Sophie and Justine can be interpreted as an escape from their former lives into a new way of life, where they have to prove that they can survive as single, independent working women.
