Modern Hebrew is closely associated with Israel and Zionism. According to the most widely spread narrative, especially in Israel, these two entities made it possible for this language to be back to life after almost two thousand years. The architect of this process, following this same account, was Eliezer Ben-Yehuda (1858-1922), who has become a key figure in Israeli popular culture. In the last decade, both him and the Hebrew language itself have been vindicated by the state institutions. Nevertheless, as it is shown in this article, for more than half a century —since Fellman (1973)— Ben-Yehuda’s direct responsibility in the Hebrew Revival has been called into question by Israeli Academia. In fact, discursive analysis and historic testimonies even cast doubt on the fact that Hebrew was actually revived.
