The role placed by the concept of impetus in the evolution of physical ideas is of great relevance. On the one hand, standing on the middle ground between the Aristotelian and Newtonian notions of movement, said concept allows us to maintain the unity of the History of Science and hence, to comprehend the essential aspects of that history up until the great synthesis realized by Newton in the XVIIIth Century. On the other hand, this concept sheds light on the fact that the Scientific Revolution of the XVIIth Century had effective antecedents in the Physics of the Low Middle Ages.
ER -
