SUMMARY Stewart Brand detects logics of adaptive configuration of the spaces, which he defines as two categories of buildings: High Road and Low Road. The former includes those buildings, which, due to their patrimonial, historical and symbolic value or because of their remarkable nature and specificity, experience adaptability through slight, precise and continuous interventions to find a balance between the spaces and new needs over time. On the other hand, Low Road buildings are characterised by their proposal of a space that is generic, “raw”, unfinished, ample, modifiable, without pretentions or authorship. Those conditions make them remarkable for being versatile, open and adaptable. These are different dynamics of generation and evolution of the space, which allow us to consider this space as support by means of the management of uncertainty and transformations over time. More specifically, Brand’s concept of Low Road permits us to find keys to adaptability and extract strategies and mechanisms regarding the “imbalance” (misfit) or the “oversize” (loose fit) of those spaces we find outlined in plans of contemporary domestic space and which are complemented with the method proposed by Brand consisting of the simulation or hypothetical scenarios or situations (scenario planning).
ER -
