Abstract

The article shows the results of an investigation centered on the figure of “bogeymen”, understood as characters or places, real or imagined, used by communities to intimidate and frighten, particularly children. The answers come from men and women of all the Andalusian provinces and all the age groups (children, youth, adults and elder). With the information obtained and its later analysis, we provide an accurate definition of this element of educational immaterial heritage made up of 102 bogeymen. We also analyzed their use by age groups or the evolution of their number and nature; we also fixed different identification categories. The results show that these figures of fear are frequently used and that they are still in use by younger generations. The ultimate goal of these characters and places is teaching fear to children as an attitude to deal with adulthood. It is not just a coercive means to teach them to behave in their daily routines, such as feeding or napping, but a way of instilling obedience through the panic or terror of the unknown.

ER -
