Résumé

The technological enhancement of a wide range of human cognitive and physical capabilities has been a key attribute of human development since the emergence of our species. New and advancing areas of innovation, such as nanotechnology, robotics, and genomics, are viewed by some observers as promising not only an acceleration of this trend, but also improvement of the species as a whole: better humans. In this essay I explain why continual improvement of human cognitive and physical performance at the level of the individual need not translate into broad progress for humans as a whole.
