Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844-1911): the Presence of Medical Subjects in Her Literary Works

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844-1911) was once recognized as one of the most famous of American authors, but later she has been unjustly relegated to a quite secondary position. Concretely on this occasion, Phelps has been chosen because she included an important innovation in the American feminine literature of her time by allowing some space to the presence of medical subjects and included in her fiction specific women doctors, who constitute just one example of the different “New Women” that she portrayed in her writings. Thus, this essay makes reference to the many texts where Phelps’s interest in Medicine can be noticed, in which she explains female readers the pernicious effects of some of their imposed habits; where the author shows —among other aspects— her context with respect to medical practices, her opposition to surgery, her preference for women doctors, and her reactions to some of the dictates and assertions made by male doctors, such as the then very famous Doctor E. H. Clarke.

RESUMEN: Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844-1911) fue reconocida en el pasado como una de las figuras literarias más famosas del panorama norteamericano, pero, posteriormente, ha sido injustamente relegada a un plano bastante secundario. Concretamente en esta ocasión se ha elegido a Phelps porque incluyó en la literatura norteamericana femenina de su tiempo una innovación importante al permitir cierto espacio a la presencia de temas médicos e incluyó como personajes de su ficción a mujeres doctoras que constituyen un ejemplo más de las diferentes “New Women” [“Mujeres Nuevas”] que solía incluir en sus escritos. Así, este ensayo hace referencia a los muchos textos donde el interés de Phelps por la Medicina se deja ver, en los que explica a sus lectoras los efectos perniciosos de algunos de los hábitos que se les imponían; en donde la autora muestra —entre otros aspectos— su contexto en cuanto a la práctica de la Medicina, su oposición a la cirugía, su preferencia por las mujeres doctoras, y sus reacciones a los dictados y declaraciones de doctores, tales como el entonces famoso Doctor E. H. Clarke.
