Smoke and illusions: An Interview with Paul Auster

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Paul Auster’s relationship with cinema comes from his apprentice years, when he wrote film reviews and even scripts for silent films which never reached the screen. Several years later, his short story “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story” led to his films with Wayne Wang (Smoke and Blue in the Face, 1995), which gave him the experience to direct on his own Lulu on the Bridge (1998) and the recent The Inner Life of Martin Frost (2007). Auster has also written about the world of cinema and even included ‘written films’ in his 2002 novel The Book of Illusions. In this interview Auster addresses his relationship with films, both as a novelist and as a scriptwriter and film director.

RESUMEN: La relación de Paul Auster con el cine procede de sus años de aprendizaje, cuando escribió reseñas y guiones para películas mudas, no muy distintas de las ‘películas escritas’ que unos años después incluiría en su novela The Book of Illusions (2002). Pero su experiencia directa con el cine comenzaría con “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story”. Este relato fue la base del guión de Smoke (1995), dirigida por Wayne Wang, que co-dirigiría con Auster su inusual secuela Blue in the Face (1995). La experiencia con estas dos películas animó al escritor a dirigir por sí solo Lulu on the Bridge (1998) y The Inner Life of Martin Frost (2007). En esta entrevista, Auster habla sobre su larga relación con el cine, por un lado como novelista que ha utilizado este medio, y por otro como guionista y director.
