The Order/Disorder Binary In Stephen Marlowe’s Fiction: From Neurotic Subjects To Narrative Chaos

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The main goal of this essay is to analyze the notion of disorder in two novels by US author Stephen Marlowe (1928-2008), published in 1972 and 1987 respectively. It intends to show there is a high degree of continuity in the way the binary order/disorder is tackled, even though it materializes differently in the two novels. Thus, while the first novel centers on the protagonist’s mental disorder, the most relevant feature in the second one is its chaotic narrative structure. To explore these issues my study draws upon the theories put forth by Michel Foucault in Madness and Civilization and by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Anti-Oedipus. On the other hand, it also relies on the more recent discussion regarding the parallel behavior of metafictional texts and of molecular systems according to the second law of thermodynamics.

RESUMEN: El presente artículo se centra en el análisis de la noción de “desorden” en dos novelas del autor estadounidense Stephen Marlowe (1928-2008), publicadas en 1972 y 1987, e intenta demostrar que existe una clara continuidad en el tratamiento del tema, si bien en la primera novela el principal foco de atención es el desorden mental del protagonista, mientras que en la segunda el desorden se manifiesta en la estructura caótica de la novela. Para alcanzar esta conclusión, hago uso de las fundamentales ideas expuestas por Michel Foucault en Madness and Civilization y por Gilles Deleuze y Félix Guattari en AntiOedipus, así como de la más reciente discusión acerca de los paralelismos entre el comportamiento de los sistemas moleculares según la segunda ley de la termodinámica y el de los textos metaficcionales según críticos como Katherine Hayles.
